Why this distinction matters

Functional medicine for autism has a controversial history. Some early “biomedical” approaches treated autism itself as something to eliminate, sometimes with interventions that were unethical or harmful. We reject that framing entirely. The autistic individuals (and parents of autistic children) we work with are looking for help with physical health — gut symptoms, food sensitivities, sleep, energy, immune function, nutrient status. We address those physical health issues. Autism itself remains who someone is.

That said, when physical health improves, often co-occurring symptoms that aren’t core to autistic identity also improve — anxiety, gastrointestinal pain, sleep disruption, sensory overwhelm tied to nervous system dysregulation. These are quality-of-life gains, not changes in personhood.

The physical health patterns research shows

The biological dimensions most consistently studied in autistic populations:

Gastrointestinal dysfunction.

Autistic individuals show much higher rates of GI symptoms — constipation, diarrhea, reflux, abdominal pain — than the general population. The microbiome differences are well-documented and often actionable.

Mitochondrial dysfunction.

A meaningful subset of autistic individuals show abnormalities in cellular energy production. This affects cognition, sensory processing, and physical stamina.

Nutrient deficiencies.

Selective eating patterns common in autism often produce real nutrient gaps — particularly iron, zinc, vitamin D, omega-3s, B vitamins, and the cofactors involved in methylation.

None of these biological patterns is "autism." But many autistic individuals carry one or more of them — and addressing them improves quality of life.

What we look at in your testing

Our seven-test bundle covers the relevant systems comprehensively. For pediatric work, testing is sequenced and adjusted carefully — we never run a full adult panel on a child without thoughtful consideration of what’s appropriate.

How a personalized protocol comes together

Phase one focuses on whichever physical health issue is most affecting quality of life — often gut and sleep, since they have the highest impact for the lowest intervention cost. Targeted nutrient repletion comes early. Methylation support, where genetics warrant, is introduced carefully. Anti-inflammatory and gut-supportive interventions layer in based on what testing shows. We work at a pace that respects sensory and behavioral considerations.

For families, this is collaborative work — autistic children’s preferences, sensitivities, and routines shape how we sequence interventions. We don’t impose protocols. We co-design them.

This works for autistic adults seeking comprehensive functional medicine support for physical health, and for parents of autistic children whose physical health (GI, sleep, immune, nutrient status) needs investigation. It works best for families who want neurodiversity-affirming care that addresses biology without pathologizing autistic identity. This is not appropriate for anyone seeking to "cure" autism. We won't pretend that's what this work is.
